Adoption

In Ontario, an adoption results in an individual taking on all parental responsibilities for an adopted child. If you are seeking to adopt a child through the public or private system, it is imperative to retain experienced counsel who can provide you with legal guidance at each step of the process.

Types of Adoption

Private Adoption

Adopt a child who was placed for adoption by a Licensee or through a private adoption agency.

Public Adoption

Adopt a child who was placed in permanent care of a Children’s Aid Society (also known as “Extended Society Care” and formerly known as “Crown Wardship”). Fresh Legal has extensive experience dealing with Children’s Aid Societies, including through the adoption process.

Step-Parent Adoption

Adopt a child by applying directly to a court for an adoption order. This process can also include adoption of adult children.

International Adoption

Adopt a child who resides outside of Canada. Fresh Legal can assist with contacting an intercountry adoption licensee to assist with facilitating a successful adoption.

What is openness?

Openness is the legal right of a birth parent to have contact with the birth child. Once a child is placed for adoption, the birth family can apply to the court for an openness order. Fresh Legal can assist at all stages of the openness process including negotiation, mediation and litigation if necessary.
